Self-Storage Frequently Asked Questions

self-storage FAQs

How does self-storage work?

Self-storage is a way to rent a storage space for either the short term in between moves or in the long term when you are putting things away for a year or more.

How do we do it? Firstly, you must work out what you need to store, then we will help you with a quote. You pay a deposit, and we deliver the storage modules to you to pack yourself for 24 hours. Alternatively, you can opt for a team of 2 professional removalists to pack and load your items into the storage modules.

We then bring back the storage modules to put them away safely in the warehouse. When you need to access or have your items redelivered let the office know and we will arrange this for you.

How do the items get to storage?

Our removalists or the driver will drive the packed modules to the warehouse where our forklift drivers will lift your module to their designated safe spot in the warehouse.

How much notice do I have to give to rent storage?

Please give us at least 48 hours’ notice to ensure we have the right number of storage modules to deliver to you!

What can’t I store?

We prohibit the storage of living beings (plants, pets), hazardous or flammable materials (gas bottles, paint), perishable items (food), illegal items (weapons, drugs), and items with a value of over $20,000.

What size of storage do you have? How much will I need?

Each storage module is 2.4m(H) x 1.8m (W) x 2.62m (L) and has a 10 cubic metre capacity.

Generally, 1 storage module can fit a studio apartment’s contents. For the typical 2-bedroom apartment, we recommend 3-4 modules, for a 3-bedroom house, 4-6 storage modules.

What if I have the wrong size of storage?

The benefit of the size of the module that we stock is that we can easily adjust the number of modules to the volume you need. We will generally bring more modules than the volume we calculate for your storage requirements then only charge you for the modules that are packed.

If by some small chance, you need more storage space than we have provided we will need to return to the warehouse and deliver more modules at the earliest available opportunity.

How much does self-storage cost?

Our 10cbm modules start from $159 a month each. Lower prices can be negotiated if you prepay the year in advance for long-term storage needs.

What is the minimum time I can store with you?

The minimum storage is overnight.

How long can I keep the self-storage?

This is completely up to you! You can keep items in storage for as long as you want.

What happens if I move out early?

That’s no problem! Let us know 48 hours before you need the redelivery of your storage modules and we will book this in. There are no early exit fees, however we do not issue partial refunds of storage that you have paid for in advance. Furthermore, if you locked in 12+ month discount rates the remaining 12 months is still payable to us if you end up vacating earlier than 12 months.

How can I pay?

We will bill you monthly. You can pay your invoices via credit card, set up direct debit, or electronic funds transfer.

How often do I need to pay?

Most customers choose to be invoiced monthly. If you prepay for a year of storage, you can get a discount when you prepay for the entire year! However, if you exit early, you will not receive a refund for storage fees.

Are there any extra costs?

There are no hidden costs. However, if you require additional storage services such as storage for oversized items that won’t fit in a module, e.g. billiard tables, grand pianos or if you want removalists to move anything heavier than 80kg, a specialty item charge may apply.

What happens if I don’t pay?

Late payment fees of $25 may apply if you do not pay your storage fees on time. If storage invoices remain unpaid for 42 days or more, we will consider it an abandonment and reserve the right to enter the storage module, sell or dispose of your items as per the Personal Property Securities Act 2009. The cost of this will be payable by you and will be deducted as well as any outstanding storage fees from the sale price of your items.

When can I get access to my things?

The warehouse is open 9am to 4pm Mondays to Fridays and 9am to 12pm on Saturdays. Please book access by calling us or emailing us and giving us 48 hours’ notice during the warehouse opening hours.

Can someone else access my space?

You decide who gets access to your space. Let us know who is allowed to access your space. Our staff cannot access your modules without your permission.

Are my goods insured?

We carry basic forms of insurance: public liability and goods in transit cover. We highly recommend you add insurance by clicking on this link: https://buy.removalsinsurance.com.au/Public/PreQuoteQuestions?PackageId=16390&pageNumber=1&TEXT_ReferrerGUID_SuppliedFromEntryLink=CAR_VMOVER

What kind of security is there?

After hours the warehouse is locked up and the yard gates are also padlocked. The warehouse also has alarms and CCTV.

Where can I get boxes?

You can rent plastic boxes from us starting from $2 a box per week, or we also sell cardboard boxes starting from $5 each. We can often negotiate lower prices for box rental for customers who store for a month or more.

What do I need to do to move out?

To move out, contact us at least 48 hours before you need your items delivered and we will send through a quote and tentative booking. Pay the booking deposit and any outstanding storage fees and we will redeliver your modules to you!
