How Much Does Self-Storage Cost In Sydney?

self-storage cost

The average price of a 3.0m x 3.0m self-storage unit in Sydney is $317 per month. However, the general price range is $200 (from 2.0m² units) to $500 for the largest unit monthly. The location, size of the unit, add-on services, and type of storage unit account for the differences in pricing. To help budget for your self-storage, here is a breakdown of what you can expect to pay for self-storage.

Price of self-storage units by size

Based on data from Spacer and some of the biggest self-storage providers in NSW and VIC, the price range by size of unit is as follows:

Size of storage Unit

Typical price range

2.5m²-9m²

$80-$200

10m²-15m²

$190-$400

116m²-40m²

$275-$1000

40m²+

$600-$6000

Price of self-storage by location

It probably will not surprise the reader that the most expensive self-storage rentals are also in the suburbs closest to Sydney’s commercial centres. The most expensive self-storage units are in the suburbs close to the CBD (Moore Park - $340-$600, Alexandria - $330 - $500) and in the lower North Shore (Artarmon - $300-$500, Chatswood $250-$400). The Inner Western suburbs of Marrickville and Camperdown and Sydney Southern suburbs of Rockdale and Bexley are not far behind with self-storage units ranging from $250-$400).

As you move further north and west the prices go lower and lower with the most affordable self-storage in Galston, Seven Hills, and Windsor with prices ranging from $190-$350).

Of course, unless you need long-term storage, location may not be something you are that flexible with. If you need access to your self-storage unit often (for work purposes, because you are renovating, or are in between leases/homes), you will probably want something local. However, if you are travelling overseas or going to live abroad and do not need to access your storage until the end of the period, getting a self-storage unit further out will reduce your costs considerably.

Price of additional features: security, temperature control, humidity control, etc.

The cheapest self-storage units are often housed in spaces without climate or humidity control and basic security features. Expect to pay premium rates for temperature-controlled units (through air-conditioning), humidity control, CCTV, pin code access, and gated or manned security. These features may add anywhere between $10 to $200 monthly depending on the services you require.

Note that most items may not need to be stored under such conditions. We do, however, recommend you get a quote for these features if you are planning to store heirlooms, antiques, high quality wooden furniture, or if you are storing in areas where extreme weather conditions may affect the environment, such as very low temperatures, flood prone areas, and high humidity.

Other features that will affect pricing are as follows:

  • Indoor vs outdoor – Outdoor storage for items such as vehicles tends to be cheaper

  • Access – 24-hour access will cost more than the usual access (9 to 5 with a day’s notice)

  • Fireproof and waterproof – will add on to the monthly fee

  • Time period – You can often negotiate a discount if you are looking to book long term storage (over a year).

Add-on Services and additional fees

Bear in mind that the self-storage monthly fee may not be the only cost you need to budget for when you store. Read any storage carefully when comparing quotes. These items are some of the usual additional fees that are part of many self-storage contracts:

  • Cleaning fees

  • Late payment fees

  • A refundable bond

  • Early release fees

  • Abandonment fee (usually the cost of auctioning your abandoned items)

Other add-on services that are worth considering are:

  • Move in and move out fees if you end up hiring people to help you.

  • Insurance (usually starts at $1 monthly per $1000 worth of items)

  • Additional security such as padlocks.
